How to Spot Quality Cabinet Construction

The details you can’t see from the doorway.

Most people judge a kitchen by the door color. The people who build cabinets for a living check something else first, usually with their hand in a drawer. Here’s what they’re actually looking at, and how you can check it yourself in about five minutes.

Door style and color are the first things anyone notices in a showroom, and they’re the easiest things to compare. But two cabinet lines can look nearly identical from three feet away and be built completely differently underneath, whether you are comparing frameless and face frame construction or two lines in the same style. How can you tell quality from a drawer joint?

Before anything else, pull a drawer all the way out and look at how the corners are joined. This one detail tells you more about a cabinet line’s real quality than the door in front of it ever will.

Two corners look almost the same from a few feet away. Up close, one is cut from interlocking wood joints that lock the box together mechanically. The other is two flat boards held with staples or glue and a dowel. The first will hold up to years of being opened, loaded, and slammed shut. The second starts to loosen the day the staples begin to work free. Dovetail joinery is one of the details that matters more than cabinet style alone.

What should cabinet door reveals look like?

Step back and look at a full run of cabinets, not one door at a time. The gap between each door and drawer, called the reveal, should be nearly identical all the way down the wall, usually within about an eighth of an inch. Tight, even reveals stand out especially on frameless lines, but the same check applies to any cabinet style.

That kind of precision only happens with tight manufacturing tolerances and a box that’s built square. If one door on the showroom sample is crooked, it’s rarely a one-off. It usually means there’s no way to adjust it, which means every kitchen built from that line will have the same problem somewhere.

Do quality cabinet hinges adjust in all directions?

Every kitchen shifts a little over time as the house settles and humidity changes with the seasons. What keeps doors hanging straight years later isn’t the initial installation, it’s whether the hinge can be adjusted after the fact.

Open a door and look at the hinge plate. A quality hinge adjusts in at least three directions, so a designer or installer can fine-tune height, depth, and tilt without removing anything. It should also close with a soft, controlled motion rather than slamming shut on its own.

How do manufacturers match cabinet colors over time?

Almost every line will show you a wall of finish samples. The better question is what happens when you need a cabinet built two years after the original order, whether that’s a new pantry, a bar, or a replacement door.

Manufacturers who match paint to a standard system, rather than mixing an in-house custom batch, can reproduce that exact color on demand. That’s a small operational detail, but it’s a real signal that a company has built consistency into its process rather than leaving it up to whoever mixed the paint that week. What should you ask about cabinet warranty and service?

No manufacturer gets everything right every time. The difference between a good one and a frustrating one shows up after the order ships, not before. A dealer or designer who’s worked with a line for a while usually knows exactly how responsive that company is when there’s a damaged part or a wrong finish. If you are buying through a dealer, ask whether their team gets direct dealer support and training from the manufacturer when issues come up.

You won’t see this on a showroom floor, so you have to ask for it directly.

  • How long does a replacement part usually take once you report an issue?
  • Do you deal with the same manufacturer contact every time, or does it vary?
  • Has anything changed about how this company handles service in the last year or two?

Take five minutes before you commit

None of this requires expertise. It just requires opening a drawer, stepping back to look at a full run of doors, and asking two or three questions most showrooms are happy to answer. The line that holds up to all five checks is usually the one that holds up in your kitchen, too.
